Jay M. was a very talented rodeo cowboy who competed in high school rodeo. His dream was to become a bronc rider and compete in the National Finals Rodeo someday.
But, in his sophomore year, Jay was diagnosed with stomach cancer. He underwent chemotherapy and radiation and was diagnosed in remission. That year, he qualified for the high school rodeo national finals.
In less than a year, Jay’s cancer had returned and he routinely underwent rounds of chemo at the MD Anderson Cancer Research Center in Houston .
Western Wishes learned of Jay’s condition and found out that his dream rodeo was Cheyenne Frontier Days—The Daddy of ‘em All. Thanks to the generous contributions from Clay and Rusty Sewalt, Ross Coleman and Justin McBride, Jay’s dream came true. He met many of his rodeo heroes and attended the Brad Paisley concert with a special meeting with him.
Jay also co-hosted the “Breakfast of Champions” with Western Wishes alumni Rachael Hanson in 2004 when Tyler H., a victim of Spinal Muscular Atrophy got his NFR wish. This was an inspiring example of kids helping other kids and touched our hearts to see it all come together.
Jay’s courage and his strong faith was inspiring to everyone — never a complaint, and always hopeful. Most of all, his need to bring his rodeo buddies to a better understanding of God was his main concern. Jay passed away on March 8th, 2007, but not without a brave fight. His undying faith and his strength will continue to touch our hearts for years to come.
